Vitamins Nutrition Supplements...

Hello, I'm Adrien. Most people, especially in western culture, choose their diet based on immediate gratification ("What am I hungry for?"). We really don't give much consideration to the long-term effects and nutritional needs. To add to this, the nutritional value of the food we eat has diminished substantially over the last 30 years.

That's why we've created this special page on how Important vitamins and nutrition supplements are to your well being..

What are Nutrition Supplements?

There are approximately 3,000 food additives that are classified into major categories.

Nutritional supplements replace nutrients which were lost during food processing. Some of the common fortifications are: vitamin D in milk and vitamin A in margarine.

Preservatives protect food and delay spoilage.

Flavoring agents are the most commonly used additives. For example, monosodium glutamate (MSG), this is used to enhance flavor especially when a natural flavoring is unavailable or too expensive to use in a particular commercial product.

Coloring agents are additives which are used strictly to make foods more attractive to the consumer.

Nutrition supplements can also be taken to keep borderline blood pressure down.

Dehydration and vitamin deficiency can contribute to high blood pressure by making your veins and arteries work far harder than they should have to. Some herbal teas can also act as natural diuretics. Ensure that you don’t replace water with them. Drink at least 8 glasses daily of fresh filtered water. Hydrate yourself properly and ditch any sodas, pop or soft drinks if you drink any as they all dehydrate you terribly and rob you of your essential B complex of vitamins and vitamin C as well as leach the calcium straight out of your bones by disrupting the calcium phosphorus balance.

Vitamin C rich foods will assist in lowering high blood pressure as will foods rich in magnesium. Consuming more leafy and green veggies which are rich in vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and magnesium, fibre, water will help. Eat them raw or lightly steamed as cooking takes out the "good" vitamins and nutrients.

Which Nutrition Supplement Should I Take?

Despite the marketing claims it is impossible for any one multivitamin to be "the best". They all are formulated differently and there are big variations in solid versus liquid form, absorption, and purpose.

Liquid Vitamins (not to be confused with "Suspension Liquids") are seldom the best because minerals separate VERY easily, so they are the hardest to guarantee you will get the correct amount of every vitamin and mineral you need… unless it is dosed via individual vials instead of one big bottle.

Tablets are somewhat better because they have a more precise amount of the ingredients, but some people have more trouble digesting tablets, especially if they have digestive problems or lower stomach acid. Also, most people do not drink enough water or eat them with food and almost half of the dose is passed straight through the system without ever being fully absorbed.

Capsules and soft gels are a little better from an absorption stand point because they have a certain amount of each vitamin and mineral that’s listed and they are absorbed by the stomach quickly and easily.

Aside from the form of delivery, the most important thing is to get a multivitamin from a company that can verify that they have good quality (so you know you’re getting what it says), and make sure the distribution of ingredients is good (minerals around 100% of the RDA, etc).

Find one that is taken at least 2 times throughout the day so that your body can absorb the full amount. Calcium can only be absorbed by the human body up to 600 mg at any given point in time and should be taken up to 1000-1200 mg per day. Any less, and it may impact bone health… and more, and the Calcium may build up in your system (which can be worse).

Taking a cue from Walmart (and what company hasn't taken SOME form od inspiration from Sam Walton ) The Vitamin Shoppe doesn't refer to its employees as "employees". they are "Health Enthusiasts". The company even has specialized training for these Health Enthusiasts called Vitamin Shoppe University dedicated to specialized training in vitamins and nutrition supplements.

Overall, The Vitamin Shoppe is a well organized corporate operations with a keen eye for helping the consumer. You will do fine going there for your vitamin nutrition supplements although product prices may vary from region to region.

Nutri-systems and other "paid" weight loss programs, like Weight Watcher and Jenny Craig, are programs that have a weekly or monthly fee and they send you meals ready to cook and eat. The nutrition value of these meals is precisely measured and your progress is monitored (as long as you pay the fee.

When using Nutri- systems and any other diet program you need to be aware that the vitamins nutrition supplements you take may affect your progress and results. Any additional supplements should be made known to your sponsor/ representative so they can assess whether or not they will affect the program you are on. You should also be aware that you may need to get rid of EVERYTHING else in your pantry and refrigerator to take away any temptations.

Nutri-Systems offers many different plans ranging from $8-10 per day, unless you find coupons. They have programs designed specifically for men, women, diabetics, and even a vegetarian plan. Although, I don't recall the last time I saw a vegetarian that needed to lose weight. While I am a professed carnivore, most vegetarians that I know are already pretty darn thin.

Recently, Nutri systems followed the Jenny Craig lead and started providing "mind set" makeover with DVD's, and weight loss counseling. So it is a comprehensive set up and approach to change your life style as well as your eating habits.

With current economic conditions, signing up for such a program is a big decision. But if you need the additional motivation of "hitting your wallet" or having a couch, it may be the program for you.
